General Goal(s): Students will use information from their social studies lessons on Knowlton Township and present it to the class in a digital story.
Specific Objectives:
Students will learn facts about Knowlton Township from during a social studies class and review the booklet Historical Sites of Knowlton Township in their reading class to gain further knowledge of our town. Students will use the gained knowledge to create a digital story board including a script to plan their project. Students will use Photostory3 to create a digital story. Students will present their digital story to their peers.
Required Materials:
Historical Sites of Knowlton Township booklet, computer, storyboard planning worksheet, photos preloaded on the shared drive for students to use
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Students will go on a bus tour of our town to see the historical sites they will be creating their digital story about.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. Students will read the project overview on the Knowlton Media Center website.
2. The social studies teacher will teach the lessons on Knowlton Township history. This teacher will also cover the Historical Sites of Knowlton Township booklet.
3. Students will go on a bus tour of the township with the media specialist as the official photographer and the social studies teacher as the historian.
4. Students will view my digital story sample to understand what I am asking them to do.
5. Students will choose 3 locations to create their digital story about.
6. Students will create a story board to plan their digital story. They will use a past photograph and a current photograph of each location to compare and contrast them. Pictures will be already saved for viewing on the shared drive.
7. Students will view the You Tube video on how to use Photo Story 3.
8. Students will create their digital story.
9. Students will then share their digital story with the class.
Plan For Independent Practice:
- Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Students will journal about their field trip experience and the creation of the digital story. The journal entry should include the highlights of the trip, the best part about the digital story creation, and the hardest part about the project.
- Assessment Based On Objectives: Use the rubric below for evaluation. Click here to get the rubric.
- Adaptations (For Students with Learning Disabilities): This project can be done with a partner. The teacher should choose the groupings to ensure a good mix of abilities.
- Extensions (For Gifted Students): Students have been given a minimum of six pictures to create their story. An extension a student may choose is to create a longer digital story. They may also get more detailed with their animations. Another extra task would be for a student to take some of their own photos to use in their story.
- Possible Connections to Other Subjects: This project has a mixture of subjects it covers. It is primarily being done in the computer class with a mixture of social studies and language arts. Once the digital story creation has been learned, the students will be able to create story on any topic for any subject.
